Artists Statements: My boat sculptures, which vary from abstract to literal, are meant to reflect man's interaction with the sea. Many people walk the beach collecting objects. I began thinking about the consequences of this compulsion to harvest a bounty of value. My desire is to comment on the possibility of coveting nature as a folly, similar to overloading a lifeboat. This interaction between man and the sea should be done in a way that is sustainable and in balance. In this series of work with Tom, I hope to set up a narrative about the world of water and humanity's relationship to it. Each object from the beach holds a story of time and travel in its' transition to becoming sand. We do not supply a solution to the oceans bigger problems but try to convey a sense of mystery and contemplation that we hope will intrigue the viewer. The northwest coast tribes, it is said, see the world as water surrounded by a bit of land rather than the other way around. My paintings are studies intended to reflect this reversal of perspective.
